CHRONOLOGY OF AVIATION IN HAWAII

 

2010

  • Hawaiian Airlines introduces the first of 27 new Aribus A330 abd A350 to their fleet.
  • Transair offers daytime cargo services.
  • NASA partners with Hawaii on Space exploration.  They will collaborate in a variety of activities involving small satellite development, advanced aviation, space exploration, education, and science.
  • Air Force celebrates 100 years of aviation.

2011

  • WestJet adds Boeing 757 to fleet for Hawaii.
  • Hawaiian Airlines announced it would launch daily nonstop service from Honolulu to New York.
  • Alaska announces service to Lihue, Kauai.  This is the 4th nonstop destination from Oakland, California.

2012

  • January
    • 1/24/12: Kahului airport proposes improvements the the runway 2-20.
  • February
    • 02/01/12: Sections of Kala Road on Maui will be permanently closed.
    • 02/01/12: Airports at Kahului, Kapalua, Lihue, Hilo, and Kona are increasing parking fees.
    • 02/12/12: Hilo constructs new modern cargo building and light industrial facility.
    • 02/16/12: FAA provide airports $6 million in additional funding.
  • August
    • 08/09/12: Lanai Airport gains an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station and is now in compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA).
  • October
    • 10/23/12: Kahului conducts triennial emergency response exercise.
    • 10/26/12: 11 new firefighters graduate from Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety.
  • December
    • 12/18/12: Kahului Airport Security adds three new lanes to its current (six) lanes.
  • Island Air leases 5 ATR 42s to expand their fleet.
  • Hawaii state purchases new unmanned UAV from federal grant to increase security.  The FAA quickly advised that flying an unmanned aircraft around air traffic is a grave threat to safety.  The state is now attempting to sell the unused UAV.
  • Island Air introduces new pineapple color scheme.

2013 

  • May
    • 05/03/13: Lihue Airport conducts triennial emergency response exercise.
    • 05/02/13: HNL begins modernization of airport.  It also features a new Aloha Air Cargo facility.
    • 05/29/13: Kona receives new Air Traffic Control Tower and new Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting (ARFF) station.
  • December
    • 12/18/13: Airports go green; saving an average of $518 Million over the next 20 years.

2014

  • April
    • 04/11/14: New exhibit “Celebrating Our Local Heroes” is dedicated at HNL honoring the late US Senator Daniel K. Inouye and the late sport legend Wally Yonamine.
    • 04/23/14: Taxiway construction begins at Kahului Airport.
  • May
    • 05/09/14: 6 Hawaii Winners of the 2014 International Aviation Art Contest are honored at ceremony at HNL.
  • June
    • 06/09/14: HNL street cellphone waiting lot is relocated 1/4 mile in the Diamond Head direction.
    • 06/11/14: Kona airport receives new Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting (ARFF) station.
  • July
    • 07/09/14: Lihue debuts new bar in main lobby.
  • October
    • 10/31/14: Keaukaha annual tsunami disaster exercise scheduled at Hilo Airport.
  • December
    • 12/07/14: Kona conducts triennial emergency response exercise.
    • 12/08/14: New transportation deputy directors appointed of airports and highways divisions.
  • A United Airlines and US Airways plane have a close encounter mid flight north east of Hawaii.  After the miscommunication, security procedures were induced and the possible collision was avoided.
  • Island Air CEO Paul Casey steps down and is replaced by David Pflieger.
  • Allegiant drops flights between Hawaii and Bellingham.

2015

  • March
    • 03/17/15: Groundbreaking for new ARFF station on Hilo.
  • July
    • 07/02/15: Public viewing of the Solar Impulse 2 at Kalaeloa Airport.
  • October
    • 10/28/15: New car rental facility opening at HNL.
    • 10/30/15: New parking rates at state airports.
  • November
    • 11/02/15: HDOT Airports Division improves bond ratings.
  • December
    • 12/31/15: HDOT offers workshop for women seeing airport fire fighting careers.
  • 1,400 photovoltaic solar panels were installed on The Pacific Aviation Museum roof.  It is expected for this to save the museum $300,000 a year in electrical costs.
  • Aviation performance by the Blue Angels and other acts hosted at Kaneohe Bay.
  • Hawaii Army National Guard Unit receives army aviation unit of the year award.

2016

  • February
    • 02/08/16: Live fire training begins in Kona.
  • April
    • 04/15/16: Construction begins of new earth friendly facility at Kahului Airport.
  • May
    • 05/22/16: Public Viewing of Historic Solar Impulse 2.
    • 05/10/16: International travelers see 45% reduction in processing times becasue of new automated passport control kiosks.
  • July
    • 07/22/16: HDOT Airports Division celebrated the opening of the new Kahului Airport Access Road.
    • 07/29/16: HDOT opens new Hilo ARFF station.
  • October
    • 10/07/16: Emergency training exercise scheduled for Hilo International Airport.
    • 10/21/16: New exhibit honoring World War II veterans unveiled at HNL.
  • Virgin America merges with Alaska Airlines.

2017

  • February
    • 02/09/17: Annual fire training exercises begin at Kona International Airport.
    • 02/24/17: New works of art by distinguished local artists displayed at HNL.

    • 05/30/17: Hawaii’s biggest airport officially renamed Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

    • 06/26/17: Hilo International Airport (ITO) receives outstanding airport award from Federal Aviation Administration(FAA).
    • 06/29/17: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport emergency power facility is full operation.
  • July
    • 07/10/17: Hawaii airport conrac projects receive strong bond rating in response to positive presentation by HDOT leadership.
    • 07/11/17: HDOT fire chiefs receive patriot award from the employer support of the guard and reserve.
  • August
    • 08/10/17: Rental car return route modified to continue construction of new facility at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
    • 08/24/17: HDOT is in compliance with environmental regulations and comments on earthjustice’s lawsuit alleging violations.
  • October
    • 10/19/17: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport hosts triennial aircraft disaster exercise.
    • 10/27/17: Hawaii Airport Division receives upgraded bond rating from fitch ratings.

    • 11/06/17: New China Airlines aircraft begins service to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
