FAA HISTORICAL FACT BOOK 1926–1963

Following World War I, the airplane evolved from a military tool into a practical means of transport, prompting the U.S. Government to launch regular airmail services. The Post Office played a pioneering role, establishing transcontinental routes and installing navigational beacons that enabled overnight flights before other nations managed to do so. Their efforts earned them two Collier Trophies. Although initially slow to regulate civil aviation, the U.S. eventually passed the Air Commerce Act in 1926, spurred by advocacy from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.

HAWAII AERONAUTICS COMMISSION

The HAC prepared a report to the Governor each year detailing the activities of the Commission in developing airports in the Territory of Hawaii. Minutes of the meetings of the Hawaii Aeronautics Commission, 1947-1957. The HAC oversaw the development of airports in the Territory. The Airport Zoning Board met from August 15, 1952 to November 6, 1959. Minutes of their meetings are available.

HNL – 80TH ANNIVERSARY BROCHURE

This 24 page brochure was produced in 2007 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Honolulu International Airport. It includes a map of the terminals, an aerial view of the airport with runways and main buildings identified, as well as extensive information about all facets of the airport operation.

Honolulu International Airport—The First 80 Years chronicles the birth and growth of Hawaii’s premiere airport from its humble beginnings to its fulfillment of the 1927 dream of being the Gateway to the Pacific. There are 184 pages filled with photos, facts and stories of the people and companies who were part of Hawaii’s aviation history.
